A project focusing on creating designs and marks with texturized materials.

First graders began by experimenting with clay by maneuvering, compressing and rolling its overall shape. From there they began the process of creating clay tiles by rolling their clay into a ball, pressing with their palms flat onto the table, and lightly taping the sides and smoothing out the excess to create a square. From here they were given boxes of found objects ranging from legos, plants, jewelry, various toys, buttons, beads etc to press into the clay to create visual texture. After experimentation with impression mark making, they were given the task to create an image or design only using three or more found objects. After bisquing they were tasked to glaze their tiles while learning about the process of creating a finished ceramic piece.
